can an althon64 (939) CPU fan/heatsink be replaced while its still in the case, or is removing the motherboard required?

Unfortunately it depends on the heatsink/fan, some require their own back plate (coolermaster, zalman), many will work with the backplate already on the board (like thermalright sinks, just make sure your screws aren't too long, so they don't ya know warp your board and break things..)

That just uses the same bracket as the OEM AMD cooler... just pop it on, no tools involved..

ok so I think I've decided on the system to build, now you guys tell me if my cooling is sufficient.
AMD Althlon64 (939) 3200+
MSI K8N Neo4-F
GeForce 6600GT 128mb
160gb SATA
SuperAlien 500W
and a couple CD/DVD drives.
The case i'm getting (NZXT Nemesis) comes with a 120mm side panel intake fan, and a 120mm rear exhaust fan, theres space for a front 120mm, but its not stock.
Thinking about getting Arctic Cooling Silencer64UltraTC for CPU and Vantec Spectrum 120mm Ball Fan for VGA (fits in a PCI slot).
Is this sufficient cooling? Will probably take a stab at some overclocking once I get it. Let me know.

It didn't outperform the OEM cooler by an impressive margin.. not worth the money I don't think over the OEM cooler... I would save up another $20-30 for an XP-90, they're around the net for $36-45.. stick a $15 92mm fan on it and call it good.

case cooling is fine, make sure you get 3x120mm fans though to have air flowing everywere. just get the artic to cool your 6600GT, thats more than enough. i dont know what your psu coolings like but that will also help cooling. ermm, yeah, coolings fine. 8)

I would recommend staying away from the Aspire power supply. Try to get something with more on the 12v.
I won't use anything except a Thermalright heat sink.

I didn't even look at the PSU, good call... but I think he's doing prebuilt... hm..

The fans should be fine. Some way to control speed might be nice.
I didn't catch the power supply in the other thread but I see it is listed there as well. I take that back about the ratings, if these (http://aspireusa.net/product.php?pid=30&xcSID=151a528a714765fb7caa712db3e78a20) are correct, but I have heard only bad things about Aspire power supplies.
Are there other choices?

+12V & +3.3V are decent.. but what's the +5V, 24A..... OCZ Modstream 450W even has a 45A +5V.. hehe..

go to http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/custom/cfga64pcie.asp?v=d
Thats the configurator I'm working with. Look through the choices and tell me what you think.

The Enermax EG565P is +79, 20 more.. much better PSU..
If you don't mind +120, that Antec 550W is the best there..

$50 was my budget for cooling, and this is what I came up with:
CPU fan (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16835186123)
VGA fan (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16835888112)
HD fan (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16835888501)
What do you think?

Honestly you'll see no benefit from the hard drive cooler, the fan-card won't make more than a far-stretched 1-2° C difference for the videocard keeping the OEM cooler on it, it would be more worth your money to spend all $45 or so on a better cpu cooler...

I've always seen those drive coolers and card slot fans as being a bit of a rip-off also, they just aren't effective enough to warrant the cost.
Better to spend more on a good case and case fans that will ensure the airflow and temperature in the case cools all the components.
<edit> The Artic Cooling HSF is about halfway down the list. This gives you an idea of where it ranks among other heatsinks.

Yeah I didnt know about the HD cooler... took that off.
I'm into keeping low noise though, so the AC Silencer is a nice sound/performance trade off.
As for the PCI slot video cooler, its mainly just to light up the case and also have some function. I already have a 120mm side and front intake, and a rear 120mm exhaust.
PS: anyone know of a review of the NZXT Nemesis (not the elite)? I can only seem to find reviews on the Elite, and not the base model. Thanks.

We did a review on the Elite, but as far as I know, the only difference between the two is the top thermal panel area.
http://www.ocia.net/reviews/nemesis/nemesis.shtml
And if you have a dremel and a few spare hours, the Nemesis can be made into one mean cooling machine. XPTB and I took the dremel to his Nemesis, cutting out the front and rear fan grills. Huge improvement in airflow and also cuts down on noise. Just something to think about.
