my brother needs to have the internet on his computer which may become permement (LAN wires are pretty thick and will be hard to burry under a carpet lol (will go across a hall)) (notice wire, i got a friend who randemly diconects from the internet... while playing WoW with WiFi  so im going wired 8) 1 more thing ill need a hub with ermm atlest 5 LAN ports for when friend come over 8)
1 more thing, asuming the modem will conect to the hud to have the computer conected to the internet, HOW?? a special hub

i just got my brother computer hooked up to the internet and we brought a wired hub with 5 entehrnet slots its is wired but its alot cheaper if your going with wired you will need a pretty long enthernet cable (the one we have it 30 feet) you can get on at raido shack best buy ect
i have my ste up were the modem enthernet wire goes from to the modem to a slot called the uplink and another enthernet wire going to my computer and one goiing to my brothers computer
so you basically need a hub and enthernet wires and a wallsocket
hope this helps

Most broadband ISP's either don't offer more than 1 IP or charge more so what you want is a router. If you don't want to worry with long cable runs, get a wireless router. They're not much more than a wired router.

thanx both of you. im not going to go wireless because:
- there "hard" to set up
- my friends keeps buggering up
- i would only have 2 pepmerment computers conected, then say another 3 being my friends, and well, the last thing we want is having to sought out the the network before playing games lol
zero, im asuming you can play games between the two computers and swap files too

if you dont include the price of the card to recive the signal, theirs an extra $40

Well like funk said most isp's only allow 1 ip. The isp I work for (cableone) allows 3 ip's on their higher residental plan.
So thats something your gona want to find out & once you do know we'll all be able to help ya out better.
If they allow just 1 ip your gona need a router.

yeah, i can only have the one ip, so can some give me a link to a ideal WIRED router which can also be used for gaming + fileswaping... then i can fing it on a uk site... and get it shipped

Heres one Ive been thinking about

mainly cause it has 8ports & is suppose to be fairly easy in configuring

hmmm looks good...
one more question, just how exactly do you get several computers conected to the internet? when the modems plugged in... when you pc1 dials to the isp... and conects to the internet, does pc2 and so have to dial too to get conected, or when one computer dials, the moden/router shares it to every pc conected?

you have dialup?
if you do.....
what you can do is, put a network carn in your pc & then enable ICS (Internet Connection Sharing on the dialup modem which can be accomplished in the "network connections" window. you then plug the router into the network card in your pc then anything pluged into the router will be able to access the network & get on the internet.
to break it down into simple terms, ICS turns the computer into a gateway & does the same function of what a cable or dsl modem with a built in router.
now if you do have dialup you might actually be able to actually use a hub instead with ICS. Im not really sure thou, Ill have to ask my one bud whos a network admin.

noooo, ermm when i said dail, i ment... ermm when you dail the isp... to conect... well i dont have 56k dial up, i have 1m broadband. sorry

got ya, so you have dsl then I take it?
using ICS in my previous post is still one of your options since it sounds like your connecting to your dsl in windows just as one would with dialup.
your 2nd option is..
go into the modem settings & setup your dsl modem so that it "signs in" (so to speak) & you are no longer using your computer to log into the dsl. you would then plug the router into the modem (same port on the modem you have the pc connected to) & then plug you pc & anyone elses to the router & your done. with this option, the modem acts as the gateway (just as in ICS).
I would recommend the 2nd option & not use ICS if possible. If your not sure how to setup your dsl modem post the modem manufacture & model number so I can find some screen shots & you could also contact your isp's customer support.
Ive personally have had my network setup both ways & I didnt care for using ICS on a permanent basis.
using a router using option 2 can be a little confusing at 1st but you should catch on quick.
that piticular router I posted the link to has a hardware firewall built into it so thats something else youll have to confure also.

ok, thanx. bare in mind that i have a BT phone line and they are partners with aol (thats my isp lol). the modem is BT own brand sought of thing, which if youve guessed already, your only supposed to use it to conect to BT. although i use the aol dialer and that work too?? :???: bot soon... il be changing to BT (thats a decent company...)

Yea that piticular router & any with "PPPoE" protocol should work just fine. Once you hook the router up to the dsl modem you then go into the router configuration & set the modem to "dial in" so you wouldnt have to do it through your pc anymore, the router will take care of it.
Once the router "dials in" any computer connected through the router will be able to access the internet. If you leave it setup so you connect through your pc like you do now, only your machine will be able to access the internet but any machine connected to the router would have access to the internal network.

if it is the kind of aol where u have to open the aol client program to connect, get cable or call aol tech support. i used to use a router w/ my dsl but aol usually has to be dialed in via that stupid dialer program.
not a networking wiz, just trying to break some things down.

Qwest here is just opposite. I cant log in thru windows, can only be done thru the modem
well one must have the modem connected to the pc if thats what u mean
?_¿
i used verizon and had to use a verizon dialer program to submit login/pass in order to be given an IP and internet access. and then when on the phone and dsl at same time the connection slowed down... i lived on an island and there was no cable where i was. my dad now has msndsl and still has to use msndialer to submit his login/pass in order to be given access to the intraweb.
hehe <3 cable.
even though cable isps can suck... my isp's isp sucks balls... lol my isp refers to them as the upstream provider (?), but i ping over 300 on weeknights from about 9pm-12am on the "upstream provider's" hop... its ridiculous ive sent them around 15 emails. "it appears the problem was fixed." "weve forwarded this to our technician." "i get paid to write a response that will shut u up."

Cable internet here pretty much rocks. Cox has a plan available with 9mbps down.
Ill never even think about getting rid of Qwest untill they start blocking ports cause I run my own Web & Email server from my home.
When I lived on the east coast I had verizon dsl. I could login either thru windows or thru the modem.

(both ways) iv checked the settings, same workgroup name, both have file share on... anyonbe know why they arnt filesharing...?

do you have a firewall installed on any of those machines?
probably because one is in the modem and one is in the hub. put them both in the hub. comps in hub talk to comps in the hub and modem. comps in modem talk to modem.
