Kicked off a new series here at OCIA.net yesterday with the System Building Guide which you probably have seen on the main page.

Just wanted to get some feedback from you guys about it. Like, dislike, agree, disagree? Let's hear it! 8)

The guide is great and I am actually taking a lot fo your suggestions into consideration for my upcoming build. My only question is when is the premium build guide coming out?

I like the guide a lot! Just a few questions and suggestions:

1. The title on the front page announcement says Mainstream Guide, just FYI

2. What no FX-60, 7800GTXs or Raptors? I guess you were going for a realistic performance rig?

3. Also, Lightscribe on the drive is a cool feature, but I am fairly sure that it requires special CDs to work, and if this indeed the case it would be good to let people know that. I remember being bummed out when I found that out, though.

Other than that I love it, especially since a lot of your components are what I am using in my system. That makes me feel awesome!

thanks for the heads-up about the front page... crazy stuff happens when your really tired!

as for more powerful hardware... it just isnt possible given the $2,000 budget. i mean, the fx60 is over a grand alone... and dual gtx's, tack on another grand... and your already over budget with just three items. same for the raptors... the new 150gb raptor is about $350...

the guide was written on a realiastic basis. i dont know many people at all that can afford to drop over 2k on a computer system... of course, it would be fun to write a guide where price was not an issue... but how useful would that really be, ya know? 8)

as for lightscribe, you are probably right. i have not used a lightscribe drive personally, but i will check into this more and update the guide as necessary. thanks for bringing this to my attention 8)

1. Don't I know it, I'm a high school student so I've plenty of those kinds of nights!

2. Yeah, I didn't realize at first first that you guys were doing it on a budget. But actually, just for fun I have been putting together an ultimate, end all build, so maybe I'll post the specs once I get around to completing it?

3. Yeah, it's a bummer about the Lightscribe. I was really into getting one until I found out about that. (Coincidently, HP "forgets" to include this little tidbit in their ads for the drive). Here is some info about it:

http://h10058.www1.hp.com/digital/entertainment/us/en/resources_info/lightscribe_faq.html

The important part is this:

How do LightScribe discs differ from traditional CDs and DVDs?
LightScribe media is specially coated to chemically react when a laser beam is applied to it, thus creating labels. The chemical reaction is nontoxic and does not produce a chemical smell.

Translation = You have to buy our discs to make it work.

Might I add as well that HP did not make it obvious from the beginning that this was the case, and even when on their website it took me a few moments of searching to come up with anything about the special discs. Conspiracy theorists, now is the time...[/quote]

very helpful information for someone like me who don't know much about building a computer.....by the way about the Arctic Cooling NV5 Silencer on the Performance System Building Guide, is it for all the 7800GT vedio card?? Look very useful for cooling the GPU...is it hard to install??

Thanks for a great article, playafly187.

Altough I'm pretty familiar with hardware and have the experience and knowledge in installing a new system , I found this article very useful.

I'll surely keep a print in my drawer and of course, send it to people I know, which are not "that good" in installing a new system.

THX!
