I'm currently running Linux (mandrake 10), but keep a windows XP install around for when I need to play battlefield 1942 and want my joystick to work (WineX actually emulates bf1942 quite well, but I can't get my joystick to work with it, :( )

98SE 8) i had xp for a while but didnt like it, only thing i'd liked was the looks of the gui, and i cant even count the number of errors or lockups i had when playing games on xp..never had anything like that on 98SE nor did i have to download a patch for problems regarding 98SE, everyone knows that 98SE is the best OS for gamers, if you want more then go for XP but im happy with 98SE like it is now

thats interesting. i was a huge 98se fan until xp came out and i fell in love with it. after working with both for a while, i find that xp is much more stable (no more BSOD) and installing new hardware is a snap with the auto-installing drivers. games run just fine on xp for me as well. :D

98 is also no longer support by the borg so you won't have to worry about those security/stability patches anymore ;)

I forgot I think I heard them basically being forced to support it because its still widely used. Its in fact the second commonly used OS for searches on google, with 22% (XP has 47%).

I'll contain myself on the M$ flaming, but just this once.
I use too many different computers, but I prefer these OS's, for different purposes of course:
Win2k pro, win2k adv server, winxp pro, slackware linux

XP Pro_SP1 here, occasionally I switch back to Win2K to troubleshoot a problem if I run into one and can't figure it out. Both behave very similar, but 2K is well into the second service pack and has less overall bugs and glitches in it thus far. I just hate the slow boot-up times on it, and have no problems gaming in XP, so no reason to switch back to 98.

Unless yer running XP WITHOUT SP-1, I can't imagine why you'd have issues gaming. I'd be willing to bet that if you used tthe Error Reporting Tool on one of those lockups, you'd find it's something besides the O/S.
I run XP Pro for my gaming and Internet chores, Win2000 SP4 for my Multi-track recording duties, and Server 2003 Enterprise Edition for my Business and educational stuff.

XP pro sp1 on 1 and 2k pro on my 3 year old's system.
I run like most of the people a Win XP PRO with SP1 because I had some problems with SP2 and I don't like it!
But I must say that if they resolved some issues on the 98se or 2k I would turn back to them.

Running XP64 on the new A64 rig I built for my grandson. I have found software that won't run on it, driver support still isn't all that great, but it has been running stable for over a month.

Win XP Pro SP2 on my main rig
Win2K Pro SP4 on my desktop P2 266
Win98 on old.laptop-1, an old IBM
And depending on which hard drive I install, either Win98 or Win95 on my even older laptop.
I think it's safe to say I'm a windows man...
To note here, I had FreeBSD and Mandriva 2006 installed on the 266 before win2k, but BSD didn't do what I wanted it to and Mandriva 06 is actually more of a resource hog then WinXP.

I'm up to running XP Pro Corp on all my boxes in the house now. I tryied XP64 a few times on the A64 systems, but didn't really care for it all that much, so back to XP Pro.

Huh, I'm surprised no one is running the Vista Beta. I myself have XP Pro as my main OS and then a copy of Vista Beta 1 (dot something, I forget) for messing around. I also have a little POS system from the early 90s (no joke, this thing came with SimCity and Windows on floppy) that runs 95 because it doesn't have enough memory to upgrade to anything besides 98 and I don't have a copy of that. I plan to install some distribution or other of Linux eventually, haven't really decided which yet though.
Anyway, a short story involving Vista for anyone interested:
I'm in high school and take a Networking class, and this year our instructor took the class to Microsoft HQ in Richmond, VA and we took a tour of the facilities. Nice place and their network setup is amazing, I think they said it was about 20 million worth of equipment. They showed us a preview of Vista Beta 2 and let us mess with it a bit, and I'm liking how it's coming along, so be on the lookout for that. Several nifty features, one of my favorite being the ability for the OS to recognize flash drives as RAM instantly for an extra "punch" while gaming and such, and it boots and shuts down much (and I stress that) quicker than any other OS I've worked with, there's really no need for standby anymore even. So all in all a very cool day for me. After the tour they bought us some pizza for lunch and they even handed out a few games, I got a free copy of Halo.
