Hi guys, this is going to be my first "serious" mod and i tought a little worklog on OCIA would be cool

A bit of text first

i started working at my uncle's as a Dev like 2month ago. On my first day i noticed they were thrashing old random stuff. i quickly looked outside and noticed this .... on the side of the street :

Needless to say that after a quick glance at it we both knew it was too late! I went out, picked it up, went back in, sat back on my chair, another look by the window..OH SNAP! the thrashes were gone! Now that we all know what destiny really is, let's move on.

No power button, no 3.25" bays, 1 big ass "U" shaped cover ( taller than a 20" TV ) in other words.. plenty of fun to come!

I don't exactly know how this is going to turn out yet, i sure have a lot of ideas, i just need to wisely pick the right ones. Won't say much right now :P The case is actually totally disassembled, i'll post more pics later.

Hi guys,

Sorry for not posting pictures , there's not much to show yet only but, at least you'll learn more about the project! ( not because i want to tell you more, but because i have no other choices..whores!)

Since i'm going to paint the whole case i must obviously do all the cutting first.

I want to install a small LCD on the front of the tower. My problem is that i'm not an expert in the graphic/display department at all. And i need your inputs on the matter!

Off course small screens have different resolutions/specs then a normal 17"/19" monitor and they aren't originally made to receive a signal from a PC. What are the specs i should be looking for to make sure i'll get the best of the screen?

http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/4128/frontbezelmu8.jpg

I want to install either a In-Dash Motorized LCD in the 6" x 2" rectangle ( might be forced to drop this idea, most of them are more then 7" large )
The case is 7" large giving me about 6.5" of maximum width.

or a regular small LCD in the the 6" x 6" square or simply in the lower 2 5.25" bays.

Some interesting ones, i don't want to invest too much money.. though i don't want something cheap. ( i know, the following looks cheap as hell lol )

Nice. That would be perfect for water cooling w/ all the room up top.

Which one would you go for and why ? It's frustrating how the information as specs and dimensions are very limited on most products.

Well thank you for your help, but don't spend too much time finding info on those screens .. it's as rare as pope's poo.

Anyone heard negative feedback on PSone screens?

Back in the day when LCD's were extremely popular, everyone was using the PS1 screens. I nerver heard anyone say that they had problems with them.

What exactly is going to be displayed on the screen?

Small update! August 17

The case is totally dissambled, after cutting and punching out dozens of rivets.

The U cover is no more!

Front door for 5.25" bays cutted out of an old smaller U cover.

Test fitting... good!

You can't really see it on the pics but the door is not a 100% straight line,
i cutted it with my dremel, sanded it with the dremel round sanding bit
and then 220grit hand-sanded it. That's about the best i can do, the finish is very smooth but any tips
on how i could get a perfect straight line cut with my dremel?

I noticed i didn't give much info about the project. so here it is..

I'm going with black and gold theme, sober but "classy" 8)
- Gloss black paint inside/outside.
- All visible screws are going to be shinny gold
- Small LCD in the front ( Dropped the PSone idea, too small and .. too common )
- Gold mesh/fan grills
- Custom rotatable HDD cage
- Stealthing the M/B ( not sure yet, but very tempting )

Well that's what i can think of right now, more updates coming soon!

August 18

Cutted the second side panel out of the "U" cover, now have 2 side panels and a top part, just like any regular cases.. w00t !

They are pretty massive eh ? :D

I want the case to be very convenient/practical. Considering the size of the pannel ( the "main" one ) i thought of 2 solutions :

1 - 2 handles, 1 top, 1 bottom. Near the backside of the case.
2 - Make the whole pannel a door, hinges on the front side.

What do you guys think about it ?

With such long panels I like the door idea. Maybe have two section top half and buttom half depending on how the setup is going to be...

Thanks for your input.

I thought about splitting the panel in 2 sections, but i'm afraid it won't look too good, especially with the plexi and all the mods the pannel will receive :P do-able but kind of complicated.
