I don't see why this is a major selling point.

My mobo boasts the ability to achieve gigabit internet on board, but no internet service can sell you gigabit internet. Only servers and large businesses use this. I believe it is called T3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is like buying a gun you can't find bullets for.

You can't get 100Mbps internet connection either. In most cases you wouldn't even max out a 10Mbps network card because most broadband connections top out at 5-8Mbps.

The additional speed is for connecting more than one computer together on a local area network, or LAN.

Which Category cable supports gigabit? I was also told CAT6 was fiber-optic. I'm either very mislead or very informed.

wouldnt 100mbit lines cost like 100k yearly or something, i mean y do u need all the speed? id be fine with 5000/5000 if i had that

As Silenze said, 5e or 6 support gigabit speeds. They're both copper wiring standards.

Speed/distance standards are indicated with number/letter combo, such as 100TX. (100Mbps 100meter copper) FX and SX are fiber standards. With fiber you also have multi-mode, (bigger core, more common on LANs, more forgiving) and single-mode (smaller core, longer distances) plus you also have to worry about the connector style, SC, ST, FDDI, etc.

With as corrupt Korea is, I don't believe so. T3 is for businesses and costs a ton of money.

The internet varies in speed globally, so to say korea has T3 (~44mbit) speed access to the entire internet is bogus.

The only way Every single site would load at T3 speeds for them is if they are caching the entire internet locally with a transparent proxy that everyone is browsing through. Not to deny the possibility of most of their country's portion of the internet being up to that speed.

And 50mb/sec would be roughly 400Mbit.....

No thanks. Ask any network/systems administrator you know and they'll tell you the same thing.

Someone should send a quick e-mail over to Google and tell them that we found their next big project!

He wasn't kidding, South Korea's standard intnet acess is 300mb/s up and down.

To get it to actually work that fast, you have to use multiple connections with your browser ;)
I have to use multiple connections with my measly 2mb/s down.

I think a gun with no bullets is a bad comparison, you can still chuck the gun at someone, or even beat them over the head with it.

He wasn't kidding, South Korea's standard intnet acess is 300mb/s up and down.

That's faster than LAN wire speed. Hell, the PCI bus is only 133mbps shared. Even if you had 2 PC's with Gigabit NICs connected side-by-side on the same switch you wouldn't get that kind of throughput between the two, nevermind pulling something down from the internet.

You would need:
a) A server-class Gigabit NIC
b) An interface for the NIC using PCI-X or PCIe
c) CAT5e or CAT6 or Fiber directly to the PC
d) Million-dollar switch/router hardware to handle every 1000 users

If you do a simple search you will find that 300mbps is a ridiculous claim.

The rate at which data flows through the internet is measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Most domestic broadband subscribers enjoy rates of 1Mbps. The standard South Korean connection is routinely four times that - and can be as much as eight times that. Even 100 times faster - 100Mbps - is becoming increasingly common. Chin Daeje, South Korea's communications minister, recently predicted that 70% of the population would enjoy rates of 20mps in about two years, and that by 2010, "the bulk of Korean households" would have 100Mbps. Few doubt his word.

http://technology.guardian.co.uk/online/story/0,3605,1546148,00.html

That article is a year old, so the statement that 70% of the population will be 20mbps in 2 years means they'll have 20mbps sometime next year. I have seen as high as 16mbps down on my Comcast line, although at peak times it's usually in the 8-12 range. So it sounds like the Koreans aren't much ahead of us in bandwidth, if at all.

Mmmmm....soju and kimchee.

There wasn't an internet when I last was in Korea.

Is there internet outside of Seoul? Wasn't a lot of electricity then...LOL.

speaking of gun w/ no bullets, how about those fancy pants connect 2 gigabit connections into one 2GB/s connection...

i guess this is a re-creation of old school "shotgun" modem connections.

and speaking of korea, have they gotten over their starcraft fetish?

Yes lots of building in South Korea are setup for 100Mbps service, some (a few) even get 50 Mbps.
But think why that is
a}about the same size as NJ with 5 times the population, most of whom live within 20% of the land area. (ie very easy to wire and "residences per mile passed" (a standard measurement for broadband providers) are incredibly high)

b} a government who shapes it's policy to support/subsidize it's massive electronic manufactering industry.
so yeah it's there and fairly cheap, but is not comparable to the US broadband industry.
and as silenze said even having multi gig connections at one end does no good if the inlet "tube" can only handle 50 megs shared by millions.
