i left my computer sitting idle while i went to the bathroom. i left the task manager open to monitor any activity. i have been noticing my computer to be really sluggish the past month or so. i have ran spyware removal tools, uninstalled a bunch of old programs, deleted stuff, degragged, etc. and it seems to only be getting worse. even as i type this, the letters cannot keep up with the speed at which i type. above is a pic of the task manager. i seems to be hitting highs for no reason at all.
any ideas? specs:
xp 1700 @ around 2600 speeds, 512 mb corsair pc3200 xms dual channel ram, 80 gb western digital 8m cache hdd, epox 8rda mobo, geforce 4 ti4200, etc etc

Take a look at the processes running and their cpu usages, that may narrow down the search.

If it's idle when it starts, might be indexing. See if yours is turned on.

yeh, this should help ya narrow down what process is causing it, cause if you close out of all of your programs, it should be the one bouncing up to around 70% or so (as noted by your graph)

hmmm, neither of those should really fluctuate in quick patterns like what you're showing. i would run "Hijack This" and see if it finds any thing out of the ordinary with IE. might want to also run Spybot S&D if you haven't already done so.

Go windows, it's yer birthday!
It also might just be probing the local network for shares/etc... (if you haven't configured the services.)
But that wouldn't slow it down so your typing is lagged... sounds like spyware/adware

Heh heh....I just spent two days getting MySearch toolbar off of my other computer. Though, I don't know what they had on it was worse, the toolbar or the Comet Cursor.

Most toolbars are spyware. Some are worse to get rid of than others.
Here's another spyware program, Spywareblaster. I just started using it, don't really know how effective it is yet.
