As posted elsewhere in the forums, I recently upgraded my motherboard and box to support more cooling and better overclocking.
Epox 8RDA3+, 1 gig of infineon pc2700, Forsa FX5200, Audigy2 MP3, 2x Western Digital 40 gig(8Mb) drives, dvd-rom, cd-rw-rom, FSP 400w psu, AMD 1800XP+(Palomino, which sucks for o/c...Barton 2500 on the way).
The new board is USB 2.0 compliant, yet XP constistently tells me that my joystick is recognized as an "unknown" device. It's a Wingman Force 3D from Logitech and worked very well on my last system (Also relatively new) Any ideas? I've downloaded the latest software from Logitech, as well as tried the old version included with the stick, all my XP updates are done(including the USB 1.1/2.0 compliance one) The stick registers just fine on my room mate's pc(also running XP Pr_SP1)
I'd hate to think I spent 80 bucks on a joystick that won't work with newer motherboards(especially the Nvidia chipset ones) as the idea was to improve overall performance, and yet be able to use all my old hardware. Ironically, it says the same thing in regards to my M$ Sidewinder wheel, but my webcam works just fine(webcam is the oldest of the bunch)

Unplug the joystick, uninstall the software for it, goto device manager and make sure any unknown devices have been removed there. Then goto www.nvidia.com and download the latest Nforce pack (not sure about the exact name) and install that. Reboot. Install joystick software and follow it's instructions. If while installing the joystick software it says to connect the joystick then go ahead otherwise install the software completely and then connect the joystick and see what happens. If it detects new hardware and does not install everything automatically. Let us know what screen it gets stuck at and if it asks for anything.

I've actually done what you've suggested already, and it is a good suggestion. It isn't really getting stuck on any particular screen. Windows recognizes the new hardware, starts the install, and then comes up with an error to the effect of "the hardware was not installed properly, unrecognized USB device." Added to that, the software does not recognize the joystick as being installed at all. On an off chance, I may re-format and try installing the stick prior to any windows updates, or driver updates and see what happens....pretty much ready to take a few wild stabs in the dark on some off-beat paths to get it to work. I think I've tried pretty much everything else as of late. On a side note, a friend of mine installed a new printer on thier pc running XP home, and it does the same thing, however the printer works just fine....I will have to try using it prior doing anything else to see if it actually does work before getting to drastic with it, the software that comes with the stick is simply for calibration, and setting up game profiles so you don't have to reset the controls everytime you load up a new game.

My next suggestion would be to check the device manager and make sure there is nothing listed with question marks. Also, make sure you have been through the bios and enabled all the USB adapters/options.

yeh, i'd say formatting would be a good option (especially if you didn't when you put all of your new hardware in)

I agree with that although when I built mine I brought mine back up by doing a windows repair. So far I havent had any problems. ::crosses fingers:: I am going to pick up some raptors sometime over the summer and thats when I ll do a fresh install.

Format didn't work...go figure? I actually did a full format when i put in the new hardware, it was way to much of a change to even allow boot-up from the previous install after putting it all together. This time around I tried installing the stick prior to doing any windows updates etc, and after a few windows updates, but not the nvidia updates....etc etc etc etc....ugh.... Nothing shows up as a yellow ? in the device manager(was the first thing i checked when I initially ran into this prob. All the device manager says is Standard OpenHDC Host Controller(twice) then Unknown Device(the stick) and USB Root Hub(twice).
The windows error(pop up by the clock) is One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance, please click this message....which brings you to the absolutely useless Window's Help. I've gone so far as to enable only USB 1.1 support in the BIOS, then back to 1.1&2.0, then just 2.0 etc....pretty much exhausted myself with this one.....My webcam, which is ancient, works just fine....in any of the 6 ports. Ironically, my sidewinder wheel gives the same error as the stick does...so it looks like I got a couple of peices of gamer hardware comin up for sale and I'll just replace them with newer versions....Till then, I'll fire off a couple of e-mails to tech support and see what they can come up with, both logitech and epox should have some idea of what's going on here so they can improve future drivers etc.

After going through what seems like endless hours or trying off the wall ideas, alongside all the normal venues of hardware troubleshooting, exhaustive research via Google and searching thru forums with even the remotest similarity to my USB/joystick problems, I've come to this conclusion. Microsoft sucks! I was reading on their own website, that they have removed the USB 2.0 drivers due to various "issues" that were arising, however, chipset vendors are not allowed to to make these drivers due to some sort of "conflict of interest" with M$....go figure?
The long and short of it is, I've paid money for hardware that I can't use(the irony being that one such product is actually made by M$ themselves), and all M$ can say is...."Sorry! :? " So now my quest for the right drivers to actually get this to work becomes one of surfing through many driver sites and trying all I come across, until I find one that actually does work....what a pain!
I've even gone back to Win2k to see if it was simply an O/S problem.
Any other suggestions?

I had an issue with my Sidewinder before and I remember reading like you on Microsoft's page that the hardware conflicted with VIA Chipsets. I went out and bought another USB card that had a different chipset and it worked fine after that.

Added an Opti 82C861 PCI USB expansion card. The system recognizes it, and installs it perfectly, and yet the joystick and wheel still won't work. Ironically, the webcam gets recognized in every port. ARGGGGGH!!!!!!!
They both work fine in my roomie's pc, and his is USB2.0 as well, but based on an SiS chipset.

My Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital 3D works fine with my Abit NF7-S ver2/XP, using the windows driver. Though, I get the "not recognized" message if I try to upload from my camera through the USB ports.
