So I read the preview of sp2 rc1 for Windows XP, I was wondering if anyone installed it already and how their experiences are.
Should I download it or wait until the official release?

yeh...it will have enough bugs when it is a final release, let alone while it's still beta

Linux, the only service pack you'll ever need.

I think I might start

Stupid services packs, buid it right the first time in open source code!

No software is perfect, but you dont have 1 company calling all the shots, holes/bugs/etc get fixed in days usually (especially major ones) and not months.....

keeps from going on a rant...

*dares Striker777 to say something*

I would tell you to wait atleast 6 months after the "official" release of the service pack, but no matter when you install it, you will need to install 50 patches afterword, and 2 per week from then on. So, it's really up to you. ;)

I found SP-1 to work flawlessly when I installed it. Yes there were a lot of hotfixes, but we all know there always are. No O/S will EVER be perfect, and YES that includes Open Source. But before I get flamed into oblivion for that  let me share my experience with SP2 RC1...

First of all, if you are not legit, as in you're running XP Corp. w/SP1 DO NOT...I REPEAT DO NOT try to install ANY version of SP2! You will get a rather nasty suprise in the form of WPA if you do. Yes SP2 REINSTALLS WPA even on a Corporate copy. Sorry pirates, yer out of luck. AND, if you DO put it on there, expect to have to format and start over. I begrudgingly admit I had a test machine running Corp and tried it for giggles, and despite having System Restore AND Roxio Goback, I was unable to back out of it. It wiped both. It would seem Microsoft is tired of screwin around. BOUT DAMN TIME!

The Service Pack itself shows a lot of promise, but my biggest issue is, with all the hype surrounding the new configurable firewall mods, are you REALLY going to trust an embedded firewall to protect you? I won't....I don't care HOW good it is....simply because it is now a PART of Windows, and every hacker worth his salt will be chomping at the bit to bust it simply BECAUSE it is now an integral part of Windows. Thanks, but I'll stick with a third party provider.

My second biggest issue is, WHERE IS IT ALREADY???? here we are into July, and STILL no Service Pack??? This is unforgivable, especially considering all the recent upswings in attacks, and vulnerabilities. For Microsoft to respond THIS slowly to these increasing threats is simply LAUGHABLE! And every hacker and his brother is laughing in Bill Gates face.

Yes, I paid for a legit copy of XP Professional, and I'm glad I did. Using a hacked O/S is like driving a stolen car. They'll both get you where you want to go, but yer in deep do-do if you get caught or if it ever needs maintenance. I have been pleased with the performance and stability of XP, and I expect nothing less than the same or better from Longhorn when it finally is released. But frankly, I'm in no hurry to switch. XP does just fine.

The release copy of SP2 should be out next month (I hope). SP2 RC2 has been working pretty good for me so far, the fire wall has stopped several attacks on my system in the last month of so. I haven't had any problems with any of the IE problems that just came out and I even went to several sites that have been in question just to test it out..........now I grant you that there will more than likely be new different holes in SP2, but until the hackers bust the new code, I'll be safe........
