Hey all!

So I have a rather funky network, but I'll attempt to describe it:

-The internets comes in from the street
-Goes to a modem
-Goes from a modem to a VoIP Gateway
-Goes from Gateway to a router in the basement which acts as a firewall (I think/hope)
-Router goes into an 8 port Netgear hub
-That goes through the walls to various outlets in the house
-Computers, etc.

So I'm not a network fanatic and I don't have a formal education with networks, but I need more than the 8hub + 2router ports in my house (yeah, don't ask, i need a lot)

Anyway, I was looking at these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=6%2040000030%20115010996&bop=And&CompareItemList=N82E16817111012%2CN82E16833122004

and I was wondering if they'll serve the right purpose if I just pop them in the place of the 8 port hub? 10/100 sounds like fine for a cable modem, eh?

thanks again as always :)

I can't believe your still using a hub

Either one of those would work great. If the 8 port netgear you have is in fact a hub, I would definitely ditch it, and not add to it.

10/100 is fine for a cable modem. I stream movies off a server, download files, and play MMO games all at once over my 100 mb network. Not even a hint of lag from it.

You know this question was going to get asked. what all do you have that 8 ports isn't enough?

16 port 10/100 switch? Sounds like plenty of capacity for a home network.

haha well it's an old colonial house because i'm in the historic district and i have three siblings and two parents, so on the third floor we have about three drops (two offices and a bedroom), each kid wants one drop in their room, and the "computer room" gets a few also...

mainly it's just so that i don't have to go downstairs and mess with things every time someone wants to go from the computer room to their bedroom with a laptop or something =/

but okay! sounds great! i think i'm going to go netgear just because i've never had trouble with their stuff :)

netgear is good quality for a decent price, though as you go more and more expensive you're petter of with other systems.
