Cell Phone Repeater / Booster

has anyone tried one of these? i get terrible reception in my room at my "new" apartment, both with my old treo 700p (sprint) and the newer iphone (at&t). even positioning the phone right near the window doesn't seem to help, but if i go outside i get full signal... its almost as if i live in a bomb shelter hah

i checked around a bit and found a couple places that sell repeaters and boosters, but the cheapest i could find was around $300.

I looked into it 2 years ago when my company moved into our new building. Where I'm at there are no windows and I get between 1 and no bars. IIRC the prices I saw were about the same back then, we had a bunch of people to go together on it but then we couldn't get approval to have it installed, it was gonna involve drilling a hole through to the roof or something. :|

we drilled a prison window in our cubicle the other day cause one of my co-workers was sick of yelling around it to his fellow co-worker... our boss just came by and said "nice". Maybe we should get one of these and install it on the roof of the hotel next to the microwave dish that plays the hypnotoad sound 24/7.

Can you use VoIP style calling with your phone as it is? That is, would it be a solution to buy a wireless router (for much less $$) and broadcast that to your iPhone?
