Hi, I'm new here, and need help. I have a P4 Extreme Edtion CPU. It's 3.2ghz. I overclocked it by 5% and that brought it up to 3.3ghz, I tried overclocking it by 10% and my computer won't boot. What do I need to do?

I have the ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard
1 Gig Corsair TWINX1024-4000PRO memory

EDIT: I have a 500 Watt power supply

I have the super alien-x case, it has 6 fans. So thats good for cooling, but I need to up grade the fan on my CPU. What are some good fans? Right now its running at 32C. Is that good?

I'm not sure what else you guys need to know. Sorry for asking so much.

Thanks.

It sounds as if you have a pretty good setup so far. Try increasing your voltage on the vcore a little bit to help you get the extra overclock.

I'm not sure how to do that. Is there any kinda of software?

It's done in your bios. I don't know under what setting off the top of my head though.

yeh, it's in your bios under something like "Advanced Bios Settings" or something. it's likely under the same section as the FSB adjustments. i don't have a p4c800 to check for sure though.

ok ok, I found it. I changed it to 1.65, But I am having a problem. I still can't overclock by 10%. when I press save & exit in my bios, it restarts then about midway through the restart it says

"a disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+delete to restart."

If I change my AI overclock tune back to 5%, It works fine.

Whats the problem?

mmmm, could be that your FSB is too high and there for your PCI (IDE) bus out of spec. Check in your bios for an AGP/PCI lock, on my Asus mobo your can manually set the speed of the agp bus (and therefore the PCI bus). You should get it off auto and manually put it on 66 mhz.
Also, isn't the Pentium IV EE multiplier unlocked, being a high end processor and all? That would open up a lot of other possibilities for overclocking.

Let us know

I'll give you a couple of tips, first don't use the automatic 5%-10% option that the P4C800-E offers, instead do it incrementaly a few mhz at a time to determine the threshold.

A couple things to note, the P4C800-E memory dividers are a bit different than most other mobo's

400=1/1
320=5/4
266=3/2

If you insist on using the 5% / 10% automatic options, when you try the 10%, try relaxing your memory timings and tinkering with them and the voltages in small incremental amounts.

Next point is you mentioned you want to change the fan on your CPU, I am assuming you mean you want to get a new heatsink?

If that's the case, check here: http://63.74.115.230/articles373/p4sum.asp

You should determine what noise levels you can tolerate when selecting an accompanying fan for said heatsink, a rheostat fan controller always is a good thing to buy if you dont have one. Personally I hate a noisy PC, thats why I use h20, but there are plenty of great heatsinks available, thermalright seems to be a great choice.

PS That's a nice rig you got, very similiar to mine, except i have a 3.2es

Stay cool

I agree to silversinksam.........don't use the percentage option given by the mobo, increment ur FSB bit by bit. You'll probably hit the wall somewhere around 7or 8 %.

Boost ur voltage a little, don't go too far on that.

Relax ur memory timmings in the BIOS.

Also, I hate saying this but the last time I checked, P4EEs are not good OC'ers. They have too much cache built on to the die of that thing......too many points for errors during OC'ing. If you absolutely want to go higher, see if you can find a disable L3 cache option in the BIOS. Personally that extra cache doesn't do much good.
