View Full Version : SMP Client

The version of SMP client I was using must have expired, cause I rebooted my computer today and the service would not restart. So once again I have to download the latest version of client and wrestle with that to get it working. This has happened probably 3 or 4 times in the last year or so, they put an expiration on the client and then I run into problems getting the new version to work.

I just spent the last hour and a half trying to get 6.22 to work and the best I can get is it running 100% on only one core. If I try to specify -smp in the config then the service won't start. I've tried both 6.22 versions, the original mpi and the new Deino, uninstalled and completely removed the folder, reinstall and same thing.

I've been reading lots of posts about problems with 6.22 but didn't see anyone with my particular issue, most of them seem to be concerning EUE's, and I can't even get mine to run much less end a work unit early.

I realize the SMP client is beta and I know they don't "officially" support running this as a service, but why do they give you the option to install it as one and then it doesn't work? And why do they have to always break something every time they release a new version? My machines could all be running smooth for months and then bam, the client expires and I have to figure out what they changed in the new version so I can get it working again.

I have to admit this latest version > me, cause I give up. I don't feel like wasting any more time trying to get it running as a service, and I refuse to run 4 console windows to max out my quad. The old version is still running on my server and it should continue to run as long as I don't reboot it, but sooner or later that will go away too. Oh well, at least my electric bills will go down.

I thought with the SMP client, it would be one console window, and with a regular client four? Did I miss something in the last few months?

You could just run four regular client services, also, right?

But yeah, it's stupid, but one of these days it'll work haha

Yup, that has always been the way the SMP client worked... you simply run one instance of it and it can load up to four cores. But apparently this is not the case anymore, I could only get 25% CPU utilization with this new version. There's a new flag you can use -smp but when I tried that it would just give me an I/O error, even from a command prompt. If I tried to launch it as a service it would never start and the same error would show up in the fahlog. Yes I could run 4 regular console windows but that's stupid to have to do it that way. It has been years since I last used the graphical client but I don't believe that supports multi-core processing either.

*Edit - I did some gaming and then came back to this and got it working on the first try. I think the problem was I had renamed the Folding@Home-Win32-x86.exe to just fah.exe for simplicity. When I left it the default name it worked, go figure.

It seems that the new SMP client is not as efficient as the old one. My PPD dropped 10% on my X2 and 5% on the X4, a loss of around 150ppd. The good news is that GPU production is up by 400ppd. Too bad I don't run it 24/7 like the SMP though. :(
