View Full Version : Opterons
Does anyone out there know if an Opteron 848 will pair with an Opteron 248, in a dual system?

I don't know for sure, but I would say that it is likely it will not. If you do get it to work, I doubt you will see the performance you want from it. Dual proc motherboards are really designed to use matched processors.

I agree with Kryo on this one, although I admit never seeing anyone trying to use different procs in a dual processor board. You might try and let is know. It would be interesting to say the least.
or disastrous, but either way we're more than happy to know it if works :).

Didn't you ask the same question on Ars? I thought I remembered a similiar question, without ever getting an answer beyond the "I think" stage.

Well... the difference between a 148 and a 248 is the 148 can only run single, the 248 can run dual, same specs.
Found this.....
Opteron 248 series run at 2.2 Ghz 800 MHz HT 1MB L2 940 Pin
OPteron 848 series run at 2.2 Ghz 800 Mhz HT 1MB L2 940 Pin
go here:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_8826_9240,00.html
" 100 Series = 1-way servers and workstations
200 Series = Up to 2-way servers and workstations
800 Series = Up to 8-way servers and workstations"
so yeah should work..
Actually, I don't know what the hell I'm building. Up until one year ago, I had not even looked inside a computer. I was beginning the 3rd year of a psychiatry residency and was preparing a presentation on the pathophysiology of psychosis. I wanted to give a whiz-bang presentation with animated 3D graphics so I set about finding a good computer system for the task. The stress of a medical residency is incalculable and I was burning out fast. I found playing with computers to be a wonderful diversion from the brutal grind of my work and studies, allowing me to tinker blissfully for hours on a brain of a different sort. I became obsessed with the idea of building a computer that was bigger and better than any computer in town. The hottest computer I'd seen, up until that point, was a dual processor Mac, used by a researcher in our department. He was very proud of that computer and frequently bragged on the superior prowess of the thing. I had to go him one better and I decided to build a dual processor, liquid cooled beast that was faster and flashier than his prized posession and at the same time would provide me with what I needed for 3D animated graphics. Over the next few months, I surfed and researched with my cheezy little Celeron rig and began buying, online, a part at a time, the stuff I would need for my evolving vision. I had to pace my buying so that my wife would not detect, what she would certainly deem as frivolous spending, but the UPS delivery of a full tower, Koolance, water cooled, computer case busted me and I had to whine and beg and compromise to continue the project. Eventually I put together a dual Athlon MP 2400, water cooled system. My wife dismissed my creation as looking like some kind of over-the-top Borg device, that cost way to much money and was of no use to her at all. To make a long story short(er), the demise of one of the CPUs has given me the excuse to upgrade. I decided on a dual Opteron system with it's glamorous 64 bit capabilities. I found an Opteron 848, on ebay and picked it up for a fraction of it's retail price. I really did not expect to get it for the bid I made, but I did and now I have to find a mate for it. At $1500 each, I cannot afford another, at this time. It is the same processor as the 248, but set up to operate with up to 7 other processors, while the 248 will only work with one other processor. I have put the question to AMD and they have promised an answer within the next few days. I had also posted the question here, as overclocking looks like it might be a lot of fun.

lol, sounds like a bit of a delima ;-)
i say get the other processor and try it out. if it doesn't work, just sell the other processor on ebay and save up for the matching opteron. in theory, it should work. i looked around, but i can't find anyone who has done it as of yet. it might make a good article if you wanted to write about it.

Judging from the info on their site it should work fine.. *shrug*
I just received an e-mail from AMD. The Opteron 200 series and 800 series are compatible in dual systems, so an 848 will operate with a 248, an 850 will work with a 250, and so forth...

I think you are one of the first persons outside AMD who knows that!

If and when you get that system up and running, you have got to get us some benchmarks to drool over.

And please remember that most opteron motherboards run fine with just one processor. So you can always first try wth one!
