hi im having trouble overclocking my barton 2600+ on a gigabyte ga-7n400 pro2 mobo. i have managed to get it to boot into windows succesfully at 190 fsb with a multiplyer of 11.5 and vcore at 1.7v but it doesnt seem to be stable as it crashes about 40 mins into prime95. ive got the agp frequency at 66mhz, the ram set at 100% which gave a resulting frequency of 380mhz (i have 2x512m ddr400 ram and a gf4 ti4200. temps are not a problem as my cpu is running 41 degrees under load clocked at 2185mhz its just not stable. does anyone know where I'm going wrong? or do i just not have a good setup for oc ing. this is my 1st time overclocking so some advise would be great if im screwing up somewhere
thanks
Damien

have you toyed around with the memory timings? also, what brand memory do you have?

also, ive heard that gigabyte isnt the best for overclocking...

its been a while since ive overclocked, im a little rusty... heh

hi my rams made by hynix, im not sure about memory timings, where are the options to change them? thanks

that could be your problem; no-name RAM. the timings should be under the memory section in the bios. im not sure on the exact location, as i have never worked with that board...

yeah im not proud of my ram :( ill try mucking around with the timings and see if that helps but yeh i really do need more ram. in fact that corsair giveaway is the reason i joined these forums, i didnt realise how helpful theyd be in general.

Hynix isn't very good at all I have some HyperX pc3200 bh-5 that loves voltage and can go to 240fsb with 2-2-2-11 timings. I've been trying to find another stick but they only can be found used for crazy prices.

i would relax your memory timing. it does sound like a memory issue. of course it could be powersupply problem but i would not think so. steady powersupply rails is highly underrated when it comes to oc problems.

Does that motherboard have a PCI-lock?

At 190Mhz FSB, your PCI bus would be ~38Mhz (190/5) or so.. are you using any PCI cards?

If it does have a PCI-lock, I would say the memory is the culprit, loosening up the timings would be your next step, like they've mentioned.

What is the speed rating of that memory? Barton should be able to hit 200Mhz frontside bus with proper cooling...

Try 11(Tras) 3-3-2.5 for mem timings, My 2600+ hits 2.51Ghz on stock cooling with multi set at 11.5(locked)

yeah since i posted that ive resest the memory timings, and upped the cpu voltage by 10%(around 1.85v) and i can hit 2300mhz and be semi-stable. still not happy really but i guess i can put up with it 'till i upgrade to a 64 bit setup in a shuttle. thats where the moneys gonna become an issue :P
