This from ZDNet.

Microsoft said on Tuesday that it has delayed an update to its Windows Server software as well as the first version of Windows to support 64-bit x86 chips such as Advanced Micro Device's Athlon 64.

The software maker said Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2003 for 64-bit Extended Systems and Windows XP 64-bit Edition for 64-bit Extended Systems will all be pushed back into the first half of next year. All three products, which are being developed together, were slated to ship by the end of this year.

The move is a blow to AMD, which has had its 64-bit desktop and server chips on the market for some time and has been waiting for a version of Windows that can take advantage of their capabilities. Intel has also said it will have chips that support the 64-bit extensions to the existing Pentium architecture, known as x86. There is already a version of Windows that supports Intel's 64-bit Itanium architecture, which uses an entirely separate instruction set than x86 chips.

And I told everyone to hold off on buying 64 bit chips. Don't get me wrong the AMD 64's are nice, but this has got to really be pissing AMD off.

"Thank you"

Microsoft must've realized that 95% of the AMD users would be downloading their product anyway. Better to wait for Intel to catch up.

I'm extremely late on this posting, 64-bit aside... the Athlon 64 is the new contender for the Pentium 4 in everything else.... AMD is whooping on Intel in the gaming arena with the Athlon 64s... and steadily trying to edge Apple out of the renderfarm biz....

And uh.... sorry for us amd 64 guys? Aren't we forgetting about um.. oh I don't know, Unix/Linux? heh... they've BEEN out for a long time.. (64 bit) and I'm willing to bet most of us nix geeks use AMD over Intel...

techniq, myself, and beemer all use intel, although techniq is the only one of us that has used nix for any real length of time.

i'm not trying to take anything away from the amd 64. sure, i think it's a bit before it's time, but most technology is. it's just that i personally will not be going 64-bit until my next upgrade (6 months to a year) and until there is a real need to 64-bit processing. this is like the dual processor debate. sure, dual processors sounds nice on paper, but the real truth is that most applications don't have the support for them yet.

I want dual-core processors! :D

Sure AMD might be ahead of everyone else in the 64bit arena and even though 64bit doesn't have many current advantages, I have to give them props for being first.
Personally I think its just what the tech sector needed to get rolling with some new technology, things where starting to look stagnant for a while.

definitely agreed. i'm glad they released it, it's just not for me yet.

you're forgetting unix/linux.. there is a lot of use for 64bit cpus on the server/render farm side of things...

oh well, I'm happy just to have the next AMD cpu.. and be on par with the latest Intels, I never intended to do anything 64bit real soon... tried FreeBSD-AMD64, but I don't really have a use for *nix at home.. though it was fast.. hehe

or how about dual 64 bit processors.. the best of both worlds :)
