I can't put one above the other.. they're 2 totally different games in my opinion.. different play style -- I love them both!
I will say this; Doom3 runs a LOT better than Far Cry does..
Having played through Far Cry already -- so far Doom3 is much more detailed/content rich/planned out.. Far Cry's story was weak... and the multiplayer was tacked on. Haven't tried Doom3 mutli yet... probably not until I beat it.
The only things I don't like about Doom3:
No auto-run toggle for single player (but there is for multi... wtf?)
No prone -- not like you would use it in this game, but it's a FPS given...
With both games at 1600x1200 on their highest detail levels with no anisotropic or antialiasing enabled.. (on the system in my signature of course)
Far Cry: choppiness, everywhere... needs 1024x768 on "high" (one or two settings down from max) to run smoothly/playable everywhere.
Doom3: slight pauses when loading/caching since I only have 512mb of ram, (ie; when opening a door to a new room) but doesn't drop below 25fps anywhere otherwise... generally 30-60fps. I run it 1280x1024 on "high" for playing.. runs real fast.

I think Doom 3 looks a lot better on weaker hardware, seems to me that it's pretty low-poly and just uses awesome texturing. I've played about 5 hours of Doom 3 and it's getting a little repetetive, the minor platform and jumping puzzles are good to break the monotony.
The vastness of Farcry was great, that you could take so many approaches and strategies into a fight was something new for me. Vehicles are always good, too.
Neither game has anything happening with recoil, which is a big thing for me since I was irretrievably hooked on DoD. It made accurate shooting more than just holding down the mouse button. Though, you can get slapped around by the monsters in Doom, fire a few shots into the ceiling, which can make things pretty hectic.
*Edit: One thing that silenze mentioned... The hardware requirements for Farcry might be a bit higher because the draw distance was often >500 times greater than that of Doom 3.
*Edit2: And there were trees! Lots and lots of trees!
Graphics go to Doom 3.
Gameplay goes to Farcry.
Story goes to... Half Life.

Yup, I agree its hard to compare the 2. Doom plays better on lesser hardware and looks just as good as farcry IMO. FarCry game play was more fun due to the fact theres so many options, you dont have a pre determined path.
I like the look and feel of D3 more though

I haven't gotten my hands on Doom 3 yet, and just recently got my hands on Far Cry. So far Far Cry is pretty impressive. The MP does seem a little tacked on, but I think it could get pretty fun (kind like UT2004 with the vehicles). I played around one level and if you ran your boat ashore you had to push it back into the water. Some boat battles would probably get pretty cool.
IMO Far Cry just to do alot of every FPS out there, and does it relatively well. Oh, and I got Far Cry running in linux with Cedega pretty well (even at 1024x768 and settings mostly at Medium, the game is still impressive to look at, and runs ~50-60fps through Cedega, aka WineX 4.0, on my GeForce4 4600/P4 2.8/3.3 2g Ram system).
As for Doom 3, I'm still waiting for ID to release the linux binaries (YAY), which is in a "coming real soon" state.

After playing Doom3 for a while now.. I've gotten the Soul Cube.. this game is keeping my attention and me on the edge of my seat more than Far Cry did..

I am more into a "realistic" setting, with modern weapons. Dont get me wrong, I love to go hog wild a bfg or plasma gun, but I like games that put you in senerios that could or actually have happened. I loved farcry until the whole trigent thing came along. It was still good, but I liked the begining better. I havent played a whole lot of doom 3 yet, but from what I have seen its going to be pretty sweet. Speaking on gameplay alone, I would go doom 3 so far. There are a lot of little extras that make the game more interesting.

DOOM 3 is the spawn of Satan!

LOL well, I dunno if it's the spawn of Satan per se... I haen't played Far Cry yet, but I've seen it. Looks really cool/good graphics. I can't comment on the gameplay, being as how I've never played. Doom 3,which I acquired on Tuesday, has incredible graphics, and I for one LOVE horror movies/stories and mysteries, so I'm LOVIN Doom 3. It's got me on the preverbial "edge" of my seat just like silenze.
Doom 3 rocks!

no...
I have to say FarCry. Honestly Doom3's graphics and engine is amazing, but it can't make up for the lack of gameplay. honestly i played it for ten minutes. that first ten minutes it scared the crap out of me. after that i was utterly bored with the game.

I'm beginning to feel the same way... 'cept I've been hooked on Doom 3 for more than 10 minutes. More like 10 days for me. But yea, it is pretty much the same thing over and over and over, just with new demons every now and then. But then, what were we expecting from the latest in a line of classic "blast everything in your path" games?
Doom 3 has been fun. I'm nowhere near the end (I don't think...). I will admit that when Doom 3 was announced and I saw the graphics, somehow I got the feeling that maybe this game would have more going for its storyline than the classic Dooms... maybe this would have a great story-line PLUS the sheer enjoyment of blasting the crap out of a moaning demon with a gun that you shouldn't humanly be able to pick up, let alone fire at 20 rounds/sec. As I play on, however, I'm realizing that it's really just another game about blasting demons. Not much of an improvement on the story-line (although there is a slight improvement...), but KILLER graphics!! If nothing else, this game has gotten me fired up to see what Half Life 2 will be like :)

FOLLOW UP NOTE: I will very likely be investing in a copy of FarCry and that collection pack of Half-Life1 and all of the popular mods very soon, due in part to the good reviews of FarCry in this thread. I've never played Half-Life 1 or FarCry, so this should be interesting

lack of game play? they're 2 DIFFERENT GAMES, different styles of play...
yes that's true, but the gameplay its just the same as it was 10 years ago. i mean it's the same story line and the same monotonous zombies running after your brain. i mean multiplayer can only support 4 players. it's not different gameplay for the fact of them both being fps. but it's just my opinion. everyone is free to enjoy the game but i just think it plain out sucks.

Now I want Half Life 2 and Quake 4 !!! :?
Me too. Of course who knows when even a beta version of quake 4 will be made public. I can barely find any information on quake 4 as it is. I have a feeling that Half Life 2 won't be what it's all cracked up to be. I hope it is.

Well ok, I guess the way you play they're considered the same thing, but the difference in environments/interactions/level layouts/guns/goals/AI behaviour/sequences, scripted or not, make a world of difference in the way I approach the games... I can't help but feel that all of these things affect the way others approach the games as well...

Understandable  I'm one who likes variety in games - especially in fps games. RPGs however, I could play 20 different games with the same basic idea (fight monsters, gain xp, level up, learn magics, equip better armor/weapons, etc...) and never get tired!!!
Long live RPGs!!! ( the video game kind... the real life RPG stuff sounds kinda lame to me... )

lemme clarify... I like varety in overall storyline/objectives/game feel in fps games. Simply new weapons, monsters, and dungeaons typically doesn't cut it for me. But that's awesome that you enjoyed it so much! :P
For the record, I do enjoy Doom 3, just not what I had expected is all

It was based on far cry vs doom 3..
far cry's game play is way more open than doom... you can prone, you can get a sniper rifle, you can be stealth.. just to name a few things...

Don't forget Halo 2 :D
I agree Silenze... maybe i should have made myself more clear. Far Cry's ability to have an unscripted AI and more realistic capabilities and what not are more like my approach to games. I like tatical games. I'm a fan of all the tom clancy games (Ghost Recon was one of my favorites). I would have probably enjoyed doom a whole lot more 2 years ago. Just since i've been gaming my view on games I like to play now as opposed then, I would have to say I like farcry better. I think the doom engine is a wonderful engine and they probably haven't even touched the surface of gaming with it yet.
Now, as far as Halo 2 goes I'm a huge fanatic of Halo. I will admit I've spent ours just reading information on it along with reading 2 out of the 3 books out right now. I haven't got a chance to read the third one yet. I am more than excited for halo 2 but they did the same thing Valve did, delay delay delay. I just hope it's all worth the wait.

hehe
Yeah I can't wait for Doom3 mods..... should be some good stuff.
Halo.. never was a fan, when it finally hit PC it was pretty old, and the single player was kinda lame.. Maybe 2 will be out for the PC sooner than the first was...
