Did anybody else notice we went down for a couple of days? Made my week extremely boring.
What happened? It said something about bandwidth exceeded so I had an idea: we could make some subscriber service so everyone (who wants to) pays like 5 bucks a month so we won't have any of these outtages anymore.
Or was something else the culprit?

Yeah just ran out of traffic for the month... (ie; 20gb of upload per month).
I wouldn't mind contributing $5 or $10/month if it's needed..

Just click on the ads.
I think there should be ads on the forum, as I never visit the main page.

lol, we used 100gb this month i believe. we had to pay to get 5 extra gig for this month. everyone use it wisely ;-)
thx to playafly for fittin the bill for the extra bandwidth.
this happens occasionally. we're just growing quite a bit. we may end up having to upgrade our plan, but this month, it was pretty much sandra downloads that put us over.
we've talked about it before (particularly when our last hosting company bent us over the table), but we may eventually have to do a dedicated server or something similar to get the bandwidth we need. we'll be on the lookout though and if it looks like we've outgrown our plan, we'll bump it up a bit :-)

It was totally the Sandra Software...over 50% of the bandwidth was used by it.

Don't even bother trying to set up a 'donate money' plan. In all honestly, it probably won't work. We tried it over at www.forumsx.net (formally the war3.com forum, now the less populated war3.com forum. :) ), and it didn't work well. A lot of people say they will donate, and never do. Mabye one or two donate once, but then forget about it. It's not enough to do what you need.
I would suggest fastclick advertising. It's CPM instead of CPC, so you get payed whether people click or not, and as your traffic increases, so does revenue. I tried to get on them last time I made a site (the currently in rebuild mode FlagshipX.net) but they don't take gaming sites. Your's would probably be accepted. People can deal with a banner ad on every page, and you get extra cash.
EDIT: Sorry guys, I didn't realize how old this was. I was honestly trying to help. :)

good suggestions. possibly one banner might not be bad. we try not to overload our site with advertisements though. this isn't tomshardware after all ;-).

LOL... becareful. with all the Hard OCP lawsuits tomshardware might find this and sue us for bad advertisement

I don't think commenting that a site has a lot of advertisements even comes close to grounds for suing.. heh :P
there's only 2 right now... and a smaller list of hardware for pricing than we have.. heh

I would suggest it as kind of an 'In Place Of' type thing.
Look at page 4 of the PDF HERE (https://fastclick.com/fastclick.pdf). That's the base rate for the different advertising Fastclick does. You get 65% of whatever you see on that page. CPM is cost per 1000 clicks, so clickthrough rate is irrelevant.[/url]

Sorry for the double post, I just want to make sure that it doesnt get missed...
I was looking at the advertising on your front page. Your using Google ads, which I have had some experience with. Frankly, they aren't nearly as good now as they once were, as the revenue recieved by the Publisher is decreasing for whatever reason. They are very secretive about there rates, which is, in my opinion, just a method to keep people from knowing how big a cut they take. I was not at all happy with the amount that I made when I was with them.
You also have what seems to be either a link exchange or a Advertiser to Publisher sold ad space. I'm not sure how much your making on this, but I would compare your revenue (if it isn't a link exchange) to fastclick.
I know very little about the 'compare prices on' type thing. I would guess (an uneducated guess at that) that it is commission based? If this is the case then your probably not making a lot off of them, since commission based advertising has proven largely ineffective unless your running a site frequented by the right age group (above 20 or 25), since younger viewers won't be likely to spend money.
I've done a lot of research on this, and for the average site CPM seems to be the most reliable and effective form of advertisin. If you'd like, I can help get something set up. Somebody can give me a ping on AIM sometime: 'Caj Darkmoon'. Not asking for anything in return, but I don't mind helping people out.
