Antivirus and firewalls are for sissies.
Go to blackviper.com and set up your services according to one of his guides. A important one to turn off is Remote Registry Service. The most annoying one is Messenger. Though, turning off DHCP or DNS server doesn't always produce the best results.
Get a non-Explorer browser, keep windows updated, don't be a dumbass and open that suspicious email, and your computer should be rock solid.

i actually used to think like this also. while i used explorer, i had all the windows updates, didnt open stupid stuff, etc....

ran a free virus scan one day and found 19 viruses

cleaned everything up, and recently found out that the school offers free Symantec antivirus, which i have been running ever since.

Never hurts to add good spyware apps to the list. Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D are at the top of my list for must haves, and I run Norton's Internet Security(firewall and a/v) as well.

If your looking for a good software Fire Wall, Tiny Personal Firewall is the best IMHO. They claim its what the military uses to help lock down their computers.

I'll have to check to see what the Army is really using these days.......... I'm retired, but I still have some contacts in a local Army IT department................
