View Full Version : Emails = gone :(

I was on the computer last night, sending out a few emails via Outlook Express. All of the sudden, the power goes out and we are left in total darkness (with no flashlights).
So anyway, power comes back on about 5 minutes later, but the internet is not working. I talk with a friend in the same town and his is out too. I assumed something with the campus network is still down, hence the lack of internet.
Anyway, getting to the point, I boot the computer up this morning, open Express to check my mail and what do i see? That canned "welcome to outlook express" email, followed by a few new ones. No sign of my nearly 3,000 saved emails, dating back to 2001.

sounds like a corrupt data file.
Outlook express saves his data files in:
C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{NUMBER}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Go to that directory and see if you can replace the new inbox.dbx with the old one (which must still be there). If not, try to import it into either outlook or outlook express.
Also: BACKUP!
Keep us posted.

Awwww....now you've given those Windows/M$ haters another excuse to beat us up. :)
But, I can't say that has ever happened to me due to power outtage...only when doing an upgrade from ME to XP...and maybe from a reinstall.

You need to look here first:
C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\
See how many directories there are (they're named like this: "{2C7A8CD0-78FA-427F-BF86-AE333A20DC52}"), if there is more than one.. check the sizes, if one is of significant size, that's going to be the one holding all of your messages... if they're both small, or there's only one, then may have gotten lost.... but if you find one folder is quite large, and there's 2.. make a backup of the big one, then dump all of it's files into the smaller one.. if you get me, then open outlook express and see if your messages are there..

thanks to jurtje and silenze for giving me the heads up.
i checked this directory (which i had a backup of, but the backup is several months old) and found two inbox files, the second named inbox (1). for some reason, the (1) was created and took over as the 'head file', so to speak. i removed this one, renamed the original inbox file to (1), and everything is back to normal.
on a pretty odd side note, turns out, the cause of the city-wide power outage was a cat!
it managed to sneak its way into a power substation, touched something it shouldnt have, and BAMM, no more electricity, and sadly, no more cat...

Have any of you seen the movie "The Boondock Saints"?
They have a scene where one of them accidentally shoots the cat, blowing its guts all over the wall.
Lol... Its actually funnier than it sounds
Warning:
Not something for the hole family to watch, but a good movie.

REALLY??? hehehe. you'd think the blood all over the wall would have been the first clue :D

Well, if it was a "hole" family, there'd probably be blood somewhere anyways. =P

Yeh, i did see boondock saints. It was an awesome movie, though just a bit on the sacreligous part. Well possibly not sacreligous depending on your views. If you think it's ok for people to kill "bad" people in the name of God, then you won't see anything wrong with it.
