View Full Version : decided to take the plunge

well I recently decided to take the plunge (pun fully intended) and watercool my cpu. Heres the setup I'm likely to get:
Black Ice Extreme (will fit snugly into the front of my case)
eheim 1048 (I think its 1048...the one that does 600l/h and has 1/2" barbs)
Silverprop Cyclone Evolution VE (the only decent block I could find with 1/2" barbs and a clip mount system)
and I was going to make a resevoire to fit into a 5 1/4" drive bay
and that comes to roughly $360 (New Zealand dollar so about $235 American) so now, since I'm a watercooling n00b can anyone see any glaring errors in my (proposed) setup? also, how do you think it will do when cooling my 2600+@2300mhz at least? im planning on a higher overclock but i need to get my cooling sorted first

oh and i almost forgot, what kind of 120mm fan would be the best? i want it to be reasonably quiet and was thinking of a silenx would this give enough airflow or do i need something a bit beefier?

im not big into watercooling, but i saw that you mentioned a res. for your 5 1/4 bay. perhaps something like this would work for you?

http://www.case-mod.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=2_49_53&products_id=237

if you have already seen it, then just ignore me :)

are you planning on only cooling the CPU, or going all out with GPU and chipset also?

on a somewhat unrelated topic, ive always had the idea in my head to set up a watercooling system with either A) a good size fishtank as a res. (that way, you wont really need any fans at all, as the water should cool itself via room air). or B) get a huge radiator, like one from an old muscle car..... again, so much surface area, more than likely wouldnt need fans for it.

sure, you couldnt take the system anywhere, but i bet it would be darn quiet :)

yeah that res looks pretty nice, im just a bit limited by a few things like: budget  and the availability of things like that in New Zealand, Im buying everything else locally so i dont really wanna import things but thanks anyway, ill have a look for a similar one in NZ. I'm only cooling the CPU for now, i figure ill get nice temps if i use the BIX to just cool the cpu, i can have some air cooling for the chipset as ive heard only bad things about how much nb waterblocks affect the flow of water through the system. and as for gpu im not gonna bother watercooling my leadtek ti4200 as ill probably upgrade soon and its stock cooling is actually massive.

yeah ive thought about just having a massive tank of water, itd be pretty sweet cos convection would take care of all the cooling since there would be such a massive ammount, and if the temps got a bit toasty you could always chuck some ice in there 8). heaps of people use heatercores from cars for cooling but i spose i didnt because theyre hard to fit into your case and you often have to put in diff barbs...i want my cooling now now now :(

yeah, understandable.... sucks about the lack of products to choose from too.

as for the big rad, i meant big, like, the size of your case.... hehe... let it sit beside the case or something.. lol

You could always build a external system for a large heater core and a large rez like I did. Makes it easier to work on your system also.

hmmm... how would you get the piping to convert using a radiator? that would be a fun OCIA project shawn, i can get us a radiator for damn near free, if you can get another watercooling kit to try it with. hehehe

and agreed on the signature... freakin' sweet

I love the water cooling, that is pretty sweet looking. I also like your sig.

Thanks for the great comments on the cooling system and my sig. You all get the parts and I can mod just about anything......... or give it one heck of a try anyway.
As for my sig, it's just my feeling about my country, I proud to be a American. I serverd my country for 20 years in the army, spending most of the time in other countries. And to top it all off, I am a good ole country boy from the back woods of Missouri, I love my country and I'm proud to show it. Everyone has the right to think as they please and I respect that right.

You're absolutely right about being free to think how you feel, but I find it hard to understand that you use such an "agressive" sig here on this forum. Why couldn't anybody live in the USA and not love it. Maybe that person rather see things done differently, maybe he's there only to be able to support his wife far away. Maybe he's a guy who hasn't had the chance or the financial possibilities to leave the country. No one should get the "hell" out, out of any country, especially out of a country based on immigration such as the USA.
I don't love the USA, I don't hate the USA either, every time I go there I have a great time: I meet nice people, see nice nature etc. But now I shouldn't go there anymore because I don't absolutely love the country?

Anyway, this isn't the place to have a discussion as such, it's just that I saw your sig here and it made me feel rather unwelcome. So I'll leave it to this.
Btw, your cooling setup definitely rocks.

he doesn't mean anything by it , jurtje. I like it cause its funny. Personally, I don't give a rats ass if you love it or hate it. But I think its funny.

I dont think it is directed at foriegners to the U.S. More to those who live within the freedoms provided by a nation and then complain about the way those freedoms are provided. Those that show no respect to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. Although I can see where it might be offensive to some. Though I guess you could argue, "Hey its a free country!" Anyway, back to the topic at hand - how is that water cooling system coming along DaMiEn?

All I have to say to that is; Ugh, everyone should keep such opinions to themselves.....

Of course, that's my opinion so I just broke my own rule.

Sorry if my sig offended anyone, it wasn't really supposed to. It's just intended to make americans think, sort of like Beemer was saying. I have the same bumper sticker on my truck and a sign up on my house nest to the American flag saying the same thing. So many Americans take our freedom for granted.

hehe sorry for the late reply beemer, my computers been in pieces while i painted the inside black, it looks damn nice now and my watercooling components should be arriving sometime soon (hopefully tomorrow). i plan to duct the radiator at the front so that is gets fresh air then exhausts it straight outta the case so its not blowing hot air around it. ive also bought a passive zalman north bridge cooler to reduce the noise a bit more (i dont see the point of spending 100 bucks on a nb waterblock thatll just serve to heat my water up more and screw over the flow) so everythings looking pretty good right now

had a couple of scares today when my comp refused to boot because my tv card wasnt in properly (took me like 10 hours to figure it out as i immediately assumed the worst and took out the cpu ram etc and put it back in) fun times

so this is what happens when i leave a thread alone for a week or so...it turns into a war of words about America and patriotism    jks by the way

I'm really interested in seeing how it all comes out also.......the ducting of the rad is a good idea.

KryoNexus
09-21-2004, 11:22 AM
be careful ducting the intake/exhaust. you don't want to restrict the airflow, just redirect it. in other words, don't take really sharp turns :-)

DaMiEn
09-22-2004, 03:30 AM
yeah itll be a fairly gentle, rounded bend so that airflow wont be too restricted, so far everything is coming along really nicely and the case looks great now that the inside is black. Ill make sure to post some pics when i get some more work done

My watercooling is installed and running. I painted the bright red panel of aluminium black. And I cut out a large hole in my sidepanel, I have some acrylic on its way
