LOL...I got that msg after an automatic download from Windows update, for a driver, firmware, or whatever you'd call it, for AMD Athlon...after that I disabled "automatic update".

Actually if you read the windows Logo cert rules it makes sense (sort of) A 30 day waiting period is required, after all test fees are paid. (maybe for regression testing?)
In MS's case when releasing a critical patch, I think someone forgot to apply, or maybe they just don't want to be blamed when it smoke your system. ("We warned you!")

Hrmm...I've never known of a CPU that used drivers or software, or for that matter needed Windows certified testing.
In case of what Silenze posted, it was MS's own updates that didn't meet Windows testing.

Yeah... windows updates would've been tested for at least that long or longer during development/before release to the public...
There are drivers for the Athlon 64's:
AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP, Version (exe) 1.1.0.14 - AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP allows the system to automatically adjust the CPU speed, voltage and power combination that match the instantaneous user performance need. Download this Setup Installation program (EXE) to automatically update all the files necessary for installation. This package is recommended for users whom desire a graphical user interface for installation. This .EXE driver is a user friendly localized software installation of the driver designed for end-users.
I also recall having to download an updated processor driver on a fresh install of XP (no sp1) when running a 2400+ and 2500+...

Wow, thats a new one on me. What is it used for, an Energy Star feature or something?

Heh, that's really funny. It's a good thing you don't have to install the driver to get the system to work. :) That might be a little akward.

Athlon 64's have a "Cool & Quiet" technology, the multiplier and voltage are adjusted dynamically depending on how much oomph is needed... (ie; 200fsb, 800-2000mhz with 10x multiplier..) :D
That's optional of course, I run mine at 2300Mhz constantly.
