View Full Version : My first OC: The notorious XP2100+

Heh, I've brushed the edges of overclocking many times over the past few years, but I've never actually successfully pulled it off. I have a flashed Bios on my video card that was a preperation for overclocking, but then RivaTuner crashed my computer. I've read up on how to unlock the multiplier on the Athlon XP 2100+ (A notoriously hard chip to overclock), but never actually done it. Tonight I just got bored and finally got around to doing it. :) It's nothing extreme, since I'm not particularly fond of the temps I'm getting in my current case (A giant hole in the side that hasn't been filled with plexi might have something to do with this). I just got into my Bios and knocked up my FSB speed from 133 mhz to 137 mhz. The difference? Well, with a 13x multiplier, that should give me an extra 52 mHz processor speed. :)
Results:
Standard XP 2100+: 1733 mHz
My XP 2100+: 1789 mHz
So really not a huge difference, ended up being an extra 56 mHz. :) However, when I put together my new case I'm going to be putting in a kick-butt-without-bleeding-ears air cooling system. When that happens I'll be able to up the FSB more, probably also increasing the voltage a bit. I'm not going to bother trying to unlock the multiplier, although it would give me faster speeds, because, well, I'm not to keen on hard modding the chip

hehhe, i guess we all have to start somewhere. :)
my previous overclock was right around 700 mhz. that should give ya some encouragement :)

If it's a 2100 Palomino, don't even bother. Mine would run at 2v 1826mhz, and that was it. 45 & 55c
I gave it to my brother as an "upgrade."
Now I've got a cheap little mobile barton that'll do 2400 (240x10 2.2.2.5!) at 1.8v, 30 & 38c*

I did notice that its a Palomino, which sucks. It couldn't have been newer and been a tbrd, because that would have been just too easy. :) So yeah, I won't be able to get much above 1.8, but still, it's experience. The clock right now might even be too much for it, because at round 9 of the burn in test I ran my computer restarted. I hadn't hit my temp cutoffs in either the program or the Bios, since I was looking at the temps as displayed in the program, and checked the Bios temps as it restarted.
I think before too long I'll be upgrading the chip. Problem being that my mobo will only support up to a 2600, which is about what I would upgrade to. So that means I wouldn't be able to overclock it at all.

You'll still be able to overclock the 2600+ even if it's the max supported chip for your motherboard. Just up the FSB and the voltage a bit and see where it goes. The Barton core chips can't be unlocked anymore, but you really don't need to anyways. Got my non-mobile 2600+ running currently at 2.43Ghz(default is 1.917) and it's been stable since the day I bought it running folding 24/7, usually got a file share program running, as well as music, or gaming, or just surfing the net. Temps seem to stay pretty constant around 47 degrees full load.
