go for the x600
do you have a AGP slot or a PCI Express x16 slot on your mobo?

Yeah, one of 'em is PCI express and the other is AGP... I don't think any boards have both, so check to see which your board has. Also, if I were you I wouldn't bother with either of those cards. You can pick up a used 9800 Pro off eBay or [H]ardOCP for around $150. A 9800 Pro will slaughter both of those cards.

true, but the 9800 pro will not support some of the new features in the x600.

If I recall correctly, the X600 makes the 9600xt look stupid...
Edit; http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/gffx/pcie-1.html
Only real difference there is shown in Splinter Cell.
BTW: same price for one that isn't refurbished. ;) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-429&depa=0

I'm sick of the ATI vs. Nvidia debates, all use what you like and keep your opinions to yourself. 8)

respectively i dont' see the 9800's up near the 6800s. Now the x800 that's a close race, but there isn't a snowball's chance that the 9800s will beat those nvidia cards.

Heh, that's pretty much my opinion too... but I'm never one to back down from a one sided un-backed opinion presented as fact. :) :P
lol  That's what makes us human

yeh, but the 9800's aren't even in the same class as the 6800's. the only reason i would choose the nVidia over the ATI is becaue of linux support, but ATI are finally making linux drivers now, so that might all change in the months to come.
frankly, i don't like how the 6800 ultras require 2 PSU rails to power them. also, anybody that has enough money to use the SLI interface should be shot for dumping close to a grand on a video card(s) anyway

I was simply saying that based on teh budget he seems to have that a 9800 Pro would offer a better performance/price ratio than either the 9600XT or the x600. So the x600 has a couple new features, but IMHO they really aren't a big deal. Overall, the 9800 Pro will beat both of them.
And no, the 9800 Pro will not compete with the 6800 series, but then it wasn't meant to. it is a generation behind those. Again, I was considering his budget when I recommended the 9800 Pro.

I would still go x600 with pci express - that is as long as your board has pci express. It will come in handy later if you want to upgrade your vid card.

Current cards still aren't really taking advantage of PCIE, AGP is still good enough.

Eventually they will, and there is not upgrade from AGP to PCIE. So I would go with PCIE now, and then you have the option in a year to upgrade your video card to the latest/greatest thing rather than building a whole new computer.

I think my decision, after reviewing what all I can do will be the PCI express, its seems like the better choice, i just hope this ati card wont be as bad as the last one when trying to install drivers. I am an nvidia man going ati

Anyway, if you are gonna go 600 series, then yes, get the x600 PCI-E.

I wasnt starting a debate, just asking for input, and then I gave my answer. Settle down hoss.
i guess ATI and Nvidia are about as much of a hot button as Bush and Kerry.
lol... if anyone is guilty of starting a debate here, that would be me.

Exactly.... so everyone should use what they like and not voice their negative opinions about other.. because it starts a pointless debate, which ends coming to, well, you use what you like, and I'll use what I like, since both work for us, and we'll call it good.
So... what's the point.

If sick of pointless bickering = on the rag, then yes. (pointless bickering that solves nothing and gets people annoyed with each other and frustrated, heh... )
