View Full Version : A perfect analogy on how the tax system works...

I thought this was perfect:

ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this.

The first four men -- the poorest -- would pay nothing; The fifth would pay $1: the sixth would pay $3; the seventh $7; the eighth $12; The ninth $18. >The tenth man -- the richest -- would pay $59. That's what they decided to do.

The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement -- until one day, the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20. "So dinner for the ten only cost $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six -- the paying customers? How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his "fair share?" The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would end up being *paid* to eat their meal.

So the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so the fifth man paid nothing, the sixth pitched in $2, the seventh paid $5, the eighth paid $9, the ninth paid $12, leaving the tenth Man with a of $52 instead of his earlier $59. Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free.

But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth. "But he got $7!" "Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got seven times more than me!" "That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $7 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!" "Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night he didn't show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They're $52 short!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college instructors, is how the tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore.

Except in reality the richest man would hide his wealth and hire lawyers to keep the government from knowing how mcuh he made, and would likely pay much less then his share to begin with.

I take it that this didn't make it easier?

makes alot of sense... the rich man is still paying more so of course he gets a bigger cut. its like with the Kroger Plus card at their gas pumps.

If you buy 87 Octane you pay 1.50 and get 3 cents off
If you buy 89 Octane you pay 1.60 and get 5 cents off
If you buy 93 Octane you pay 1.70 and get 7 cents off

Basically your never gonna come out cheaper buying the higher grade, but if you choose to do so, you get a better savings.

Where in the sam hell do you live at....the other day i saw unleaded at 2.04 here. I would kill for a 1.70 unleaded, I have a jeep liberty that gussles the gas right now as a rental, as my other car was wrecked.

That's an example of overuse of smilies, since his car being wrecked doesnt necessarily make him a newb driver.

nah, but if you knew his driving history, you'd agree ;-)

Why not take his wallet, while he is down

And now....the rest of the story....

Actually, the rich guy is hiding much of his wealth, he actually should be paying 75.00...which totally isn't fair, because if he was telling the truth, two more guys would eat for free.

The poorest two guys actually get slipped a buck by the owner as everyone leaves, for earned meal credit.

The next poorest guy actually gets his wife fed too, but he has to deny that she is his wife, and she must sit at another table. (i.e., filing as if they weren't married)

The guy at the next table is really against the lowering of the price of the meal, because he thinks that eventually the owner is going to have to cut down on the size of the meal, and quit giving condiments for free, which is unfair for poor people.

And the lawyer two tables over thinks that it is unfair for the owner to give condiments with the meal, since all of the smaller resturants in the area charge for them...and is considering filing charges because it is unfair that the owner is creating a monopoly in the area.

In my defense, I have been driving for 5 years now, i have had 2 wrecks, 1 wreck i totaled my car and the woman's I hit, this time I had no where to go, he braked at the last minute so all I could do is lock em up and hope for the best. the guy got away with under 500 bucks in damage, while my car had 4300 in damage. Im a defensive driver, kind of hard to get stopped when the guy in front of you slams on the brakes at the last minute. So with that being said kryo, I am not a bad driver, shit just happens. Lets talk about your driving history, pulling out in front of people and rolling trucks????

yeh, but i had only been driving for 2 weeks when it happened. that and i only totalled one car, not mine and the other persons

i think you are forgetting about at least one other wreck where you mowed a guy's fence down. ;-)

Heh yeah, I'd have to say that totalling a car is not an everyday occurence. :P

I feel safe, because no one and nothing threatens a man in his Nissan Sentra. Oh... wait.
