Just curious, is this site ran off a corperate server, web hosting or just off someones server at home?

web hosting. though in the somewhat near future, we may move to a dedicated server.

For the past 2 days I have been unable to get to the website or forums.

Now I realize I am on vacation, so I'm not connected to my normal ISP. And I have no idea how Charter Communications has their DNS set up, but I'm still getting 66.194.238.158 for ocia.net and subdomains.

I was able to get here by adding forums.ocia.net and 72.29.75.171 to my hosts file. That IP is what I got doing a lookup at dnsstuff.com

Time for a new hosting company......................

I have more respect for AOL than Surpasshosting right now......

Shawn mentioned something about an email notifying of a future DNS change...

A change in DNS/renumbering of servers/relocation of site doesn't explain the intermittent functionality however, unless they're seriously retarded... and don't know what they're doing....

Yeah, it really wasn't down, the ISP was just looking for the site at the wrong IP address. dnsstuff.com was reporting the correct IP (not cached) so I simply added that to my hosts file and was able to get in.

As for caching the old incorrect address I suspect that the hosting company has their DNS setup with a long expiration to keep traffic to their servers down as much as possible. That's all fine until they go and renumber IP's, then everyone on the internet keeps looking at the old IP's until the cache expires and it will resolve it again.

Anyway, it's all good now.

yeh, sorry for the downtime recently folks. believe me, we were caught off guard just as much as everyone else. we are still having issues with some of our subdomains right now, which is why you will notice that you are at www.ocia.net/forums instead of forums.ocia.net.

hopefully all will be fixed soon.
