ABIT IC-7 Maxx 3
P4 2.4c 800fsb CoastaRica
Kingston 512mb PC3200
Coolermaster IHC-H71 heatsink
I have been running stock for about a year... and decided to speed things up... so I upgraded hsf first. Then went from 512mb pc2700 up to the ddr400 pc3200. And last I went from P4 2.4b 533fsb up to the 2.4c 800fsb.
I tried a few times.... I can't get the memory thing down...
I max out at 2800 or so. I've tried messin with the voltage, memory, and fsb...
I'm loosing hope...
thanks guys

you need to adjust the dram ratio (cpu:dram). Im guessing you have it on either "by spd" or "1:1", try 3:2 or 5:4 settings. Also check you memory timings in the "advance chipset" menu in the bios, you can raise the timings to get your memory to run at a higher speed.

I tried multiple mem timings 2.5-5-2-2 up to 3-7-3-3 varying in between.
I go it to post a few times but DEATH SCREENED as windows began to boot.... I thought this was a voltage prob. so I raised it on the cpu step by step up to 1.75v I didn't want to go higher. so I started with the mem voltage up to 2.7
never made a full boot.
err... she's about to get a smack!!!!
I need one of you pros to email me a tele number, I'll call and you can walk me though this in a couple minutes...
it's really a shame to have this nice stuff and not be able to oc it ... I've been reading on this for about 2 wks now... I can't seem to get it all straight... it's certainly the user.... well maybe the video card... I gotta ABIT FX5200 128mb that can't core clock over 235mhz!!!! I'm thinkin about burnin it.... no really.. taking outside hosing it with gas and throwing rocks at it til it sparks to a flaming death.

If you do, video tape that
I'm not real sure, but I don't think the video card has anything to do with the blue screen of death. Usually you'll just get really F'ed up colors and and messed up screen entering windows if its the video card. Mine went all plaid on me.

Welcome, smoke...nice to have another "homie" here.
Personally, I know totally zilch about Intel chips...and don't know exactly what you are doing, but maybe you are trying to make too big of jumps at a time. Start back at default, and take one o/c at a time, in baby steps.

well since you have the same motherboard as me, I guess now would be a good time for me ot lend a hand. overclockin on the IC7-Max3 isn't bad at all. on the same page that you can change the CPU speed from "default" or whatever it says, you can raise the FSB, adjust voltages and ratios. try this:
set your FSB to 240 (try 250 later on, this chip should be able to handle it). then right below it, set your divider to 5:4 instead of "by SPD". set your PCI to "Fixed" below that. adjust your vCore voltage to 1.625V. set your DRAM voltage to 2.7-2.8 (i have corsair mem that runs at 2.8). then go set your memory timings back to "by SPD" as we are going to leave the memory running at default speed since it is only 3200 (if you are able to overclock the processor up to 250 or so, look at investing in PC4000 DDR). you should be able to run very stable with these settings, assuming you have moderate cooling on the CPU.

Hmmm...What kind of power supply you have? What are your voltages?

As for my physical location... Memphis is the largest/nearest city to me.. I'm actually about 45mins/1hr away.
but to save confusion I thought I'd just list the known city

with him having pc3200 ram (200 mhz), can he really expect much over 233 fsb?

233Mhz FSB is where my ram starts to give me problems.. 230Mhz is stable with 2.7v, on 1:1 and 10x multi.
(my cpu doesn't like more than 233Mhz FSB at 10x.)
Highest I've run mine is 242Mhz/484Mhz at the 2/3/2/6 timings... at 1:1 and 9.5x multi, didn't do much extensive testing since there was no gain in performance from the little bump in my ram speed..

Thanks for the input guys... I'm gonna upgrade the PSU and RAM... then try again
any suggestions on my RAM and PSU upgrades?????
I want to get in the area of 3.4 to 3.6gHz out of the cpu... I know it's possible... but I may have to go watercooled.

for RAM, if you want to be sure that this is not the problem, go with Corsair 4400
http://www.ocia.net/reviews/xms4400/xms4400.shtml
for PSU, any good namebrand should work: Ultra, Antec, Enermax, etc. Just be sure to get something with a good amount of wattage.
For air cooling, I would recommend either the Thermalright XP120:
http://www.ocia.net/reviews/xp120/page1.shtml
Or the Swiftech MCX 478V:
http://www.swiftnets.com/products/mcx478-V.asp
and of course, the more noise you can deal with, the higher power fan to get ;)

The Evercool fan in that review is nice and quiet with 79CFM... if you don't like noise... I can't hear this one with no case fans plugged in and the sides on... (2 silent 80mm's in the PSU too..) it's like a whisper right now :P

I'm not gonna sit here and tell you that your PSU is holding you back...but generic power supplies generally don't supply the clean, steady juice that is needed for overclocking. I can't even find a Hercules 550W PSU online...but found their 450W rigs for $15.95 in numerous places...and one place that sold them 10 @ $9.95 apiece.
for PSU, any good namebrand should work: Ultra, Antec, Enermax, etc. Just be sure to get something with a good amount of wattage.
And minimum 20A on the +12v rail. Though, you can find elcheapo $25 500+ watt power supplies with rediculous claims like +12V @ 28A.
If it says "ATX Switching Power Supply" on the specs label, its most likely NOT a name brand. (I say again, most likely)
And, if it costs less than $45-$50 bucks, beware...not trying to sound like an elitist...you definitely get what you pay for with a cheap power supply.

I agree with fstroupe cause I know from experince. Before I knew any better I was suckered into buying a so called "400w" psu. After I had it awhile and started to o/c my machine I noticed that it wasnt enough and then I actually looked at the psu label, it only put out 3 more amps on the 12v (measily 13a) rail than what my girls dell does and thats an 200w psu. Come to find out the psu is rated at 400w at a short burst peak. I dont even bother looking at a psu if its under $100.
