I would image so. Looks a little rough in the picture. Big reason I ordered that was just cause it came with a 3.5g tube of arctic silver 5.

Normally a pack of auto sand paper includes 400,600,800,1200 is $4.00 at an auto parts store.
Some liquid dish washing soap ($1.50) and water works very well as a lapping lubricant.
A bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol $.88.
Total $6.38 from local Walmart and Auto parts store. Save on the shipping of $4.00 that pcviper would charge.
You still have a whole bottle of Alcohol and dish soap left over too. So wash those dishes.
A flat surface works for a work base.
The kit is nice though but the same lapping can be done ghetto style.....

This is true, but think of how much time you will spend going that route. Is an extra hour or 2 really worth savin a few dollars, I know it isnt for me. Everyones time is worth something.
The kit did what it said and I spent maybe 30mins doing it.

I was not doubting the ease of use or effectiveness of such a kit. I was imparting an alternative route.
Say I am 13 (I'm not) and getting into tweaking and money is tight for mom and pop and I have no credit card.
I would need an alternative.
That is all.

That's why I used the electrical tape and a razor knife to make rounded IDE cable for my comp, I'll replace them when I get some spare cash but for right now I just wanted to to some kind of mod and that was the easist and cheapest (total mod cost 87 cents for the razor knife and 97 cents for the electrical tape and there is stilll tons left.)

Bah, I paid about $1.50 US for my sandpaper (320 & 600, still need 1000 & 2000 to finish the job) and about $2 for a squirt bottle to keep the paper wet. Kits? Fuhgeddaboudit.

That said, do waterblocks generally need to be lapped?

I've only see maybe 1 or 2 out of 20+ that could use a lapping really..

Hey, if you also get the Artic Silver with the kit, then it's well worth the money. That usually costs at least $5 or so. So why not get it all at once, as you can't go down to your local hardware store and pick that up. But then again, you probably can now at CompUSA.
