OK, I give up... :x

NF7-S Ver2, latest bios, Liteon DVD, Liteon DVD rom, 2 SATA drives, Windows XP Home SP2...

Did a review on a case the other day...when I got everything back together, optical drives weren't recognized. I assumed my ghetto rounded IDE cable was trashed, so didn't worry. Got another today, still won't recognize them.

They are recognized in BIOS correctly...if I put IDE cable in IDE1, they are "primary master/primary slave", in IDE2, they are "Secondary master/secondary slave"...correct brand and model.

But, in Windows, they aren't recognized either in "my computer", or in device manager.

I've tried swapping the slave/master leads to each. (easier than changing slave/master jumpers on drives)

Did a system restore just for kicks, to no avail.

Go ahead and try changing to the slave/master jumpers if you haven't already, don't forget to adjust the [cable select/ jumper select] option in the BIOS. I've seen a couple boards act picky about the drive configuration.

Also test the cable your using in another computer, just because its new is no guarantee that it always good & working.

this is a problem that happens periodically with XP. i remember we used to get it all the time when i worked for Dell tech support. There is a registry entry that you have to delete.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} - "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters".

Search for something of that nature in your registry (the upperfilters and lowerfilters part) and then delete both of those keys. now reboot and you should be ok.

Drivers.

Drivers are in windows...you can't even download them from Liteon site.

Didn't help

Also test the cable your using in another computer, just because its new is no guarantee that it always good & working.

If cable was bad, would bios recognize the drives? And I re-tried the old cable...BIOS recognizes the drives with it, too.

Definitely sounds like a Windows issue, have you looked at the Event Viewer to see if it points a finger at anything that could have caused the problem.

And did you do a format when you reinstalled Windows, or just a Windows repair?

Did a clean install this afternoon...all cool now...except the hassle of downloading all of the various programs I use.

FOR THE RECORD...I have used exclusively Windows since 95 came out. This is the first wierd problem I have ever had with Windows.

Glad you got it up and running, even if you had to do a reinstall............. 8)

Well, I guess it was really time...I know most guys "in the know" do a clean install at least a couple of times a year...I don't, 'cause I HATE it!

Don't feel bad... I only do an install, when absolutely necessary (I can find better ways to spend my Saturdays too  ).
