I went out on campus today and shot some pics specifically for HDR (high dynamic range). Lemme know what you think...

Amazing detail in those pics Shawn. Almost like highly rendered video game shots.
Strangely enough if you stare at the first one for a few seconds the clouds almost seem to move.

Wow! How long time did it take to render these?
Just imagine when this becomes in game graphics. It is just a matter of time u know...

You have to take three separate photos: one taken at +2 exposure, one at 0 and one at -2, then combine the three into a single photo and adjust settings. I used a program called Photomatix Pro 3 which makes the process much easier.

These pics look like they could be from a high end game. We could create a bogus game and see how much of an uproar we can create.

Those are some of the most interesting pictures I've ever seen taken of real scenery. As has been said, they look more like something you'd see rendered in Photoshop instead of being actual backdrops.
I must admit I'm not familar with HDR or negative exposure. I know what long exposures do to blur moving objects but maybe you're talking about a different exposure? |

yeah, the whole point of doing the 3 photo thing is to get a picture at normal exposure / color, one that is much darker, and one that is much lighter. this helps to bring out the entire range of the photo and colors.
then, you put these three in Photomatix and adjust the tone mapping to your liking, then process it and save. it is a lot easier than i was anticipating to be honest.... much easier than something like infrared.
